Christian Views

Carrie Underwood has written various songs in her career. Many of songs include Christian themes to represent her faith. Some of these songs include: Jesus Take The Wheel, Something in the Water, See You Again.

Jesus Take The Wheel
This song tells the story of a mother driving on a winter's night to her parents' house with her baby in the backseat of her car. Suddenly, she hits black ice on the road and the car spirals out of control. This is when she exclaims "Jesus Take The Wheel." This is a metaphor for how her life is going. Her life is spiralling out of control and she looks to her Christian faith - a higher power - for guidance. This augments her close connection to religion - particularly Christianity. She believes God can help us gain control of our lives and lead us on the right path.

Something In The Water
Something In The Water is about a woman who goes to her preacher for guidance when she is at her lowest point in her life, with which he cleanses her of her problems and helps her find her way. This is similar to Jesus Take The Wheel, where she turns to someone for guidance. In this case it is not a higher power, rather a physical person associated to a higher power. This again shows her close ties to Christianity and how a relationship with God can better your life.

See You Again
This song's theme is to help comfort those who have lost a loved one. Her message is to show her audience how even though your loved one's physical being has died, their souls continue to live on forever and we will "see them again" one day. This hints toward Christianity and how when you physically pass away your soul ascends into heaven, and how we will see them again one day when we pass and go to heaven as well.

Anti-Christian Views

Although Underwood is a proud Christian, some of her songs can seem to contradict that idea. With the particular songs: Two Black Cadillacs, Church Bells, and Blown Away, all showing themes of murderous crimes - going against the words of the bible.

Two Black Cadillacs
Two Black Cadillacs tells the tale of two women finding out that they are seeing the same man because he was lying about his affair to them. To get revenge, the two women plot his death and murder him together, barely batting an eye at his funeral. Murder goes strictly against one of the ten commandments: Thou shall not kill. As a Christian woman, why would she produce such a gruesome song that goes against her religion?

Church Bells
This song is about a woman who is being abused by her alcoholic husband, so to escape his cruel ways she decides to poison and kill him. Does murder justify abuse? Would this murder be justified by God?

Blown Away
Blown Away is about a daughter who has an alcoholic father, so when she hears of a tornado coming their way she takes shelter and purposely does not warn him about the storm. This was part of her plan to kill her father. The tornado hit their house and as a result he is killed. Although she did not directly murder him, she wanted him to die in this storm. She knew he would get swept up in the tornado, therefore by not telling him she took part in killing him. This not only goes against the sixth commandment: Thou shall not kill, but it also goes against: Honour your father and your mother. So is Carrie Underwood for or against Christianity?
